[Article Cover Image]
The question we get asked every week
"Should we use WordPress or a headless CMS?" After 30+ sites on both, our answer is: it depends — and the deciding factors are more predictable than you'd think.
When WordPress still wins
WordPress is right when:
WordPress is not "legacy." It's the right tool for a specific job.
When headless CMS wins
Headless (Sanity, Contentful, Strapi + Next.js) is right when:
A headless site at Vercel CDN typically loads 2–3× faster than equivalent WordPress.
The honest tradeoffs
Cost
WordPress: lower upfront, higher long-term (plugins, updates, security patches).
Headless: higher upfront, lower long-term (no plugin conflicts, no update anxiety).
Editing experience
WordPress: mature, familiar, huge plugin ecosystem.
Headless: modern but requires client onboarding. Sanity's Studio is excellent; Contentful can feel complex.
Security
WordPress: 90% of CMS-related hacks target WordPress. Regular updates are mandatory.
Headless: no exposed CMS = significantly smaller attack surface.
Our recommendation
For 70% of clients: WordPress or Webflow. Fast, cost-effective, proven.
For 30% who need scale, speed, or custom architecture: Next.js + Sanity.
We build both. We recommend based on fit, not preference.
